European engines are engineering marvels — and they have specific known issues that require specialized knowledge to address properly. The BMW N20 timing chain, the Mercedes balance shaft, the Porsche IMS bearing, the Audi EA888 oil consumption — these are well-documented problems that generic shops misdiagnose. At Tony's Foreign Cars, our ASE-certified technicians have decades of experience with European engines from the classic straight-sixes to the latest turbocharged and hybrid powertrains. We use factory-grade diagnostics, OEM parts, and proper repair procedures to keep your engine performing reliably.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions our customers ask most
Q.I hear a rattle on cold startup — is that serious?
A.A rattle on cold startup is often a timing chain tensioner issue — and on certain engines (BMW N20/N26, EA888, VR30DDTT) this is a well-known failure point that can destroy the engine. If you hear a rattle, have it inspected immediately. We perform listening diagnostics, oil analysis, and timing chain inspection to determine if replacement is needed before catastrophic failure.
Q.My European car is burning oil — is that normal?
A.Some oil consumption is normal on turbocharged European engines, but excessive consumption (more than a quart between changes) indicates a problem. Common causes on the EA888 2.0T are piston ring wear, on BMW N-series it's valve stem seals, and on others it's turbocharger seals. We diagnose the root cause with leak-down testing, bore scope inspection, and turbo inspection — then recommend the appropriate repair.
Q.Do you do timing chain replacements?
A.Yes — timing chain service is one of our specialties. We replace timing chains, tensioners, and guides on BMW N20/N26/N52/B-series, Audi EA888 2.0T and 3.0T, Infiniti VQ, and other engines with known timing chain issues. We use updated chain and guide designs and OEM parts to prevent recurrence.
Q.Can you repair turbochargers?
A.We diagnose and replace turbochargers, repair wastegate actuators, and address the related issues (oil feed lines, intercoolers, boost control). We use OEM or quality remanufactured turbos and perform the proper oil priming and break-in procedures. We also diagnose the root cause of turbo failure (oil starvation, contamination) to prevent the new turbo from failing.
Q.What's carbon buildup and do you clean it?
A.Direct-injected engines (most modern European engines) don't have fuel washing over the intake valves, so oil vapor from the PCV system builds up on the valves over time — causing rough idle, misfires, and reduced performance. We perform walnut blasting intake cleaning, which uses crushed walnut shells to safely blast the carbon off the valves without damaging them. We recommend this every 60,000-80,000 miles.
Q.Do you do major engine overhauls and replacements?
A.Yes. When an engine has catastrophic damage (timing chain failure, overheating damage, scored cylinders), we perform complete engine overhauls and replacement with OEM or quality remanufactured long blocks. We have the experience and equipment to handle major engine work on European vehicles — and we discuss all options (repair vs. replace) before proceeding.
