European vehicles use sophisticated transmissions — the ZF 8-speed in BMW, Audi, and Jaguar; the Mercedes 7G and 9G-Tronic; the Porsche PDK dual-clutch; and the Quattro Haldex AWD systems. These transmissions require specific fluid, specific service procedures, and specialized diagnostic equipment. At Tony's Foreign Cars, our ASE-certified technicians have decades of experience with European transmissions. We perform proper fluid service with the correct manufacturer-spec fluids, diagnose mechatronic and valve body issues, and handle complete rebuilds when needed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions our customers ask most
Q.Does my European transmission need fluid service?
A.Many European manufacturers claim 'lifetime fluid' but this is misleading — ZF recommends fluid service every 60,000-80,000 miles for the 8-speed, and Mercedes recommends service intervals too. Heat and contamination degrade fluid over time. We recommend transmission fluid service every 60,000-80,000 miles to extend transmission life. 'Lifetime' usually means the life of the warranty, not the life of the vehicle.
Q.What's a mechatronic unit and why does it fail?
A.The mechatronic unit is the electronic/hydraulic control unit bolted to the transmission — it contains the valve body, solenoids, and computer. Failures cause harsh shifting, limp mode, or no movement. Common on ZF 6-speed and 8-speed, Audi S-tronic, and Porsche PDK. We diagnose whether the issue is the mechatronic, solenoids, or wiring — and repair rather than default to full transmission replacement.
Q.My transmission is in limp mode — what does that mean?
A.Limp mode (or 'limp home mode') is a protective setting where the transmission locks into a single gear (usually 3rd or 4th) to prevent damage while you get to a shop. It's triggered by a fault the computer considers serious — often a solenoid, speed sensor, conductor plate, or mechatronic issue. We diagnose the specific fault and repair it — limp mode is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Q.Do you service the Haldex AWD system on my Audi/Volvo?
A.Yes. The Haldex coupling (used on Audi A3/TT/Q3, Volvo AWD, VW 4Motion) has a fluid and pump that require service every 40,000 miles — and many shops overlook this. A failing Haldex pump causes AWD warnings and loss of all-wheel drive. We service the Haldex fluid and pump properly.
Q.Can you service the Porsche PDK transmission?
A.Yes. The Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission requires specific fluid service intervals and has a mechatronic unit that can fail. We perform PDK fluid service with the correct Porsche-spec fluid and diagnose mechatronic and clutch issues. We handle the adaptations and resets that keep shifts lightning-fast.
Q.Do you do transmission rebuilds?
A.Yes. When a transmission has internal damage (clutches, gears, bearings), we perform complete rebuilds or replacement with OEM or quality remanufactured units. We discuss all options — repair vs. rebuild vs. replace — with pricing and warranty information before proceeding. We also handle transfer case and differential rebuilds for AWD vehicles.
